Why White HTV Is the Only Way to Put a Light Design on a Dark Garment

Sublimation ink is transparent. It relies on a white or very light base fabric to reflect colour back through the ink layer. On a black, navy, or dark grey garment, sublimation ink produces no visible result. White HTV bypasses that limitation entirely. Because white HTV is an opaque layer applied on top of the fabric surface, it sits on the dark base with full opacity. The result is a clean, bright white design on any dark garment — something sublimation cannot achieve regardless of ink density or press settings.

White is also the most frequently used colour in layered HTV designs on dark garments. When a crafter builds a multi-colour design on a black shirt using HTV, white is almost always the first layer — it creates the light base that allows other colours to appear correctly on top of the dark fabric. Without white as a base layer, colours pressed directly onto black fabric appear muted and dull. For crafters who personalise dark garments regularly — black hoodies, navy sports shirts, charcoal corporate polos — white HTV is as essential as black HTV on light garments. Press Settings for Cutting PU Heat Transfer Vinyl White

Cut your design on a vinyl cutter with the carrier sheet facing down. Mirror your design before cutting. Weed the excess vinyl carefully, leaving only the design on the carrier sheet. Position the design on the garment with the vinyl face down. Press at 180°C for 40 seconds with firm pressure. Peel the carrier sheet while warm. For best adhesion, press again for 5 seconds after peeling.
